  9.  AB    OBJECTIVE: To investigate factors perceived to contribute to the
  10.        sustainability of the local response to HIV/AIDS and sexual health in
  11.        Bristol and District (B&D), a case study in the South West of England.
  12.        METHODS: The method of inquiry was derived from the worldview of
  13.        qualitative research and the emerging socioecological paradigm of
  14.        health. Forty-eight key informants participated in face-to-face
  15.        interviews and an organizational and community inventory. RESULTS:
  16.        Qualitative analyses revealed leadership, healthy alliances, resource
  17.        allocation, participation by the affected population, wider involvement
  18.        and local targets for The Health of the Nation strategy to be among the
  19.        perceived sustainability factors. The relationship between
  20.        organizational variables and the importance of different factors for
  21.        maintaining health, the priority of health in one's life and selected
  22.        attitudinal statements was statistically analyzed. CONCLUSIONS: This
  23.        case study generated an intergrated and interactive framework called
  24.        Reorienting Organizations and Community to Sustain the AIDS Response.
  25.        The framework suggests the need to combine behavioral and organizational
  26.        interventions that involve community to sustain HIV/AIDS prevention and
  27.        care efforts. The potential for this framework to assess and, or predict
  28.        the sustainability of a local response to HIV/AIDS and sexual health
  29.        should be tested in other environments.
